Hi Nessie and welcome to the forum.

That's a very nice little legacy even if that's all of it!

The unusual plane is a "Lancashire Pattern" shoulder plane and is really rather rare. The brace is also highly collectable. If you are interested in collecting tools, you have a splendid start and should hang on to them tightly. If you just want to sell them, for pieces of that quality I would recommend a specialist tool auctioneer. There are two highly active ones - David Stanley and Tony Murland.Either of these will give you an honest and informed appraisal of what you have.

Tony Murland published an antique tool value guide in 2007-8 which lists guide prices for what could be expected at auction. He shows the Lancashire plane at £120 - £180 and the Wilson brace at £400 - £700. Obviously prices depend on condition and who is buying on the day.

Brass framed braces have their own world of avid collectors and there are specialist books documenting every maker and variant - though you may find that these books are in themselves highly priced collectables!

As these two are both rare and collectable, I would not attempt any cleaning beyond a light dusting. Definitely do not be tempted to use Brasso on the metal parts - it destroys patina and original detail.

Let's see some more pictures - which I recommend you post in the 'Hand Tools' section.

Thanks Andy.
I have tried to find out more about the Wilson plane but so far nothing. The 2 items shown are going to be sold as I don't have anywhere to keep them and I think they should be on show. I have already sold a few pieces on ebay. I did look at David Stanley and was amazed at some of the tools listed. Never thought I would get excited looking at tools. I didn't think my pieces were of the standard that I saw on that site but it may be worth a go.
Thanks again
Irene
