I'm looking to build a T&G panel for a meter box

Something like the pic above

How do I get the t&g to fix to the frame?

Do I need to router it?

thanks

There are a couple of ways you could tackle that.

If you can do mortice & tenon joinery then make a frame with a groove all round the inside. Make the panel itself out of matching, but paint it before you assemble the door, so that when the matching shrinks, and it will, you are not left with exposed wood.

Another approach would be to use a solid piece of MRMDF for the door. Cut a rectangular hole in it and then rebate that on the back side. You can buy MDF panels with that T&G effect routed into the surface, so just cut a piece to fit and glue it in place.

S

................Or even more simple. Purchase a sheet of 6mm MDF Cut your panel to size, route in the grooves at desired spacings with a V cutter bit in your Router table or with a hand held router. Then rip the stiles and rails to size and just glue/pin the stiles and rails onto the front and back of the panel creating a sandwich of the panel.

Build the door a tad over size then rip to final size on the TS, leaving you neat edges. A solution of watered down PVA glue will act as a sizing to seal the exposed edges of the MDF prior to painting.

Good luck
