I can,t say NO
I have been offered some old timbers...over 100yrs old
hardwood unidentified as yet
20' long x 12" x 3"
I have no use for them tbh, but sure I will regret them going in a skip
I have to transport them about 30 miles

do i hire a lorry
do i get the chainsaw and "shorten" them
do I just say NO

Steve

probably shorten. depends what you are likely to make with them.

i have no use for them
so cant plan ahead
i have never seen timbers this size before

i hate to think how much they weigh..or what they have value wise

there are about 30 of them, and also about 100 20' x 12" x 1"
where the pineapple I would store them ,,,, who knows

I think they are chestnut and will make a good project...not that I have one

or at least they will keep me warm thru winter :D

Steve

have you any way of processing them? bandsaw etc.

it is an interesting situation, but not much fun lifting stuff like that.

Oh blimey... I'm salivating... what a predicament, at that age I'd have thought they would be prime timber.

I really hope you can save this pile from the skip / woodburner.

Cut to 8' lengths would still be more than long enough for most peoples uses I'd think, but I'd cut to 7' minimum so you could still get a full sized door out of it - a whole house of doors made... simple T&G construction, I know a house that needs all new doors in wales, a friends old cottage in brecon national park ...

Do you know anyone who may loan you some garden space to put them in? (with tarps over them), until you can dispose of it to woodworkers?

If it were I, I'd make dining room tables (a family member project that's been on the back burner until I salvaged suitable wood) or rustic double / kingsize beds (after my last bed I've a hankering for something better that isn't pallet wood) out of them. I'd be very tempted to get some up here to Bristol with my mates van - where we could, in theory, store most of it and distribute to others if they wanted it.

arrgh! the mind races at the thought of so much timber...

Very interesting 8)

You can always find space, I usually do - and yes you always do regret it when something potentially nice ends up on the fire or in the skip. Have a real good look at them before you go to any effort though, rotten crap isn't much use for anything :)

These are 2 "garages" about 20 foot wide and 25 foot long each

they are replacing the roof on both
I viewed yesterday when I got the offer

it is my brothers so they are foc to me
I have until march, when builders are already booked in

I am just trying to plan ahead

the rafters span the 20 foot and then have floorboards above

I like the idea of dining tables

I am just loathed to cut up the lengths
it is difficult to picture how much storage space I will need for them
the last batch I had from his loft were identified by local sawmill as chestnut so I can only assume these will be the same

Steve

i will get some pictures of timbers

unless i can find a garage to store, then they will end up in the for sale section

will be gutted if i have to take this route

Steve

here's the plan...

With so much timber talk to a few of your local joiners and offer them some of it in return for the transport. Just make sure you are keeping the best of it for yourself.

As for storage, well, I can't help there.

First of all am I right in thinking that lengths of possibly chestnut 12 inch by 3inch or 1inch are very hard to come by nowadays? As that rarity is what I'm working on as far as effort to save it from a skip / woodburner / something other than really nice furniture.

On the above assumption, could anyone possibly ballpark the value of something like this for me plz? - I ask as it might be worth spending the cash to hire a van and take a day to come get a good portion of it and bring it back to Bristol, where some of the forum members (and other woodworkers) in this part of the country might want to have some of it, for a price that takes the sting out of getting it, but less than it might have otherwise cost.

Alternatively, could it possibly be palletized at 8ft lengths? - I know you can get pallets big enough to take that, and then I could look at prices to get it shipped here.

As you can probably tell I'm quite keen to get my hands on some or more of it, and willing to share it out with other woodworkers once it's over here.

For storage we currently have a smaller shipping container in the "builders yard" area that's rented by the builder, who owes me more than a few favors and I could ask him to have it racked up on one side of it, I'm pretty sure you could get a fair few boards in there all nice n dry.

I really am quite serious about this possibility if the numbers add up reasonably.

I'll happily have a go at getting them on the roof of my Transit. I can probably arrange storage for you within a few miles from Maidstone in exchange for some of the timber.
Let me know if you are interested.

just re read this thread
i had missed the replies an apolgise

the timber is still on the garage

I will try and get a date
