To get any likelihood of Identifying wood species with any certainty from old long time stored stock that you can't identify, you need to prepare the long grain and end grain surfaces by running a plane across them and take reasonably high resolution images for comparison and folks to view.

Then compare what you see with a resource such as Hobbit House

You may get a good guide to species if it still has typical bark on it by looking at one of the many other reference sources
