Purchased this end piece offcut the other month together with other hardwoods.
Can anyone please identify for me?

Thanks Andy, I think you are correct because the timber merchant did have stocks of cherry on their price list.
 
Looks like cherry to me as well. Put a little scrap of it out in the sun for a day or so. If it turns a dark reddish color, it is surely cherry. The grain's too tight and fine for ash.
 
Its lovely timber to work with, not coarse like ash.
I will take another picture indoors this evening, the light was very contrasty at my workshop window this morning. Musn't complain about summer arriving I suppose after the previous 3 months.
 
the colour of the piece on the left in the first pic says cherry to me :) got that green hint

The pity is that its only a 200mmx200mmx50mm end piece that I got thrown in on a bulk purchase of offcuts.
