I really hate to do this but it’s got me a bit puzzled. My wood ID is usually reasonable but I’m unsure on this one.

It’s not actually a pallet but a topper for a load on a pallet so when the straps are put round it doesn’t crush it.

It doesn’t appear to be pine with those flecks….

It has a balsa vibe but clearly not from a weight point of view.

This is two different pieces, just the end grain of one - quite large rings.

It is a soft wood.

Perhaps something like larch, spruce, leylandi??
 
We had a load of pallet toppers like that which were so brittle it you tried to separate them then they just broke, I think heat treatment have a lot to answer for...
