When and how did a circular saw bench become a "table saw"? I suspect it's an Americanism.

A bandsaw has a table, a scrollsaw has a table ... so the term isn't very explicit.

I rest my case.

I've always seen "table saw" as a term for a consumer "do it all" machine; Usually a full-blooded "circular sawing machine" can be further categorized as either a Dimension Saw (aka Horizontal Panel Saw; often with a scorer) for panels, Sawbench for ripping, or Circular Re-saw (usually with a power feed) for deeping.
