:?: Hello guys,
I recently purchased a Stanley No.73 Mk.2 drill brace, 10 inch, made in england. I stripped it down to clean and restore it, but now i'm having a major problem re-assembling the chuck/jaws. Even though there are only 3 parts (spring and jaws) I cannot fathom out how they go back together. Any ideas would be most welcome.

The usual way is that two jaws hinge together at the back and the spring holds the front end apart. Screwing the outer part of the chuck down forces the outer jaws together by closing a cone down over them.
Whether that applies to your particular model I don't know - but as Toby says, pictures would help. As a new member you can upload them as attachments to your post, provided they are small image files, but you can't link to externally hosted files.

thanks andy and toby, here are a couple of pictures as suggested. It would seem to me that the 'pegs' on the end of the spring are facing the wrong way to locate in the holes in the jaws, any ideas ?

Sorry, pics didn't load first time, thanks for diagram toby, but there are no holes on inside of jaws as you can now see.

I think Toby's picture (i.e. the r/h pic) shows the solution - the spring ends sit in each jaws groove, with the very end located in the hole (from inside to outside). The spring then forces the jaws apart, whilst tightening the chuck closes them up.

Thanks Mike and Toby, problem is now resolved, I hadn't noticed that the outer groove in the jaws went under the locating hole so that the spring does indeed hook into the jaws and holds them apart as suggested. Cheers ! Think I should've gone to specsavers !

Cool. Just need to pay attention when you take something apart, draw or take pictures so you can see how it was.
