hi, i'm guessing that some companies call threads different things? is 1" x 1/8" the same as 1" x 8tpi?

Yes, first expression is quoting the thread pitch, (as 1/8 of an inch) not the usual method for imperial threads where TPI, (Threads Per Inch) is the norm.

Quoting thread pitch is normally encountered on metric threads.
