I am making a display stand that will display small items I have made on the scroll saw. I have a 4 foot by 4 inch diameter ash round post that I have fixed to an ash base. I have seen a special type of hinge but cannot remember what it is called and I hope I can explain it well enough so that someone can tell me what they are called and possibly where I can get some.

The idea is to have several small shelves. The part of the hinge that fixes to the post is a flat plate with a half round raised section in the middle. Into this raised section is a metal rod with a right angle at the end that slides into the plate that is fixed to the post. I can then make shelves that will be fixed to the long section of the rod. The idea behind all of this is that it will be easy to transport to the craft fairs and all I have to do is attach the shelves when I get there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any chance you put a drawing up of the hinge? what your describing to me doesn't sound like a hinge, more like a metal plate with a section in the middle into which I bar fits to mount a shelf on, or am I missing something.

I am not very good at explaining. Having looked through several list of hinges I suppose the nearest I can see to what I want is a cabinet hinge. Half would go into the post and stay there on a permanant basis and the other half would somehow be fixed to the shelf. I would like about a dozen shelves in all and I was thinking of using 12mm MDf for the shelves which I would spray finish and each shelf would be roughly 10 x 6 inches. If I cannot find a more suitable hinge I think using the cabinet hinge with a block under each shelf to take the other half of the cabinet hinge might work. I would fix the shelves on a permeant basis but then I just would not be able to get it in the car with all my other stuff when I do a craft fair.

If there is a need to make the shelves demountable but no need for them to swing around, how about using a through tenon on each shelf, or on a bearer underneath, which passes through a mortice in the post, and is then secured by a wedge on the far side?

Many thanks AndyT, much appreciated that you have gone out of your way to explain but ideally the shelves need to swing. My main problem is that I have 2 tables at the craft fairs and because I have so much stuff on display I am running out of space so I have to go up and by having the shelves swinging I can have then overlapping so to speak and display different sized items to maximise the room available on the post.

could you not put a hole in shelves and drop on from the top
and a wedge at different heights to hold them

could possible rotate them then

on a second thought , if u make the holes oversize
they would tilt a bit, but may grip the post without fixings

Is this the kind of idea you mean? Sorry about the crudity of the dwg  but just trying to get an idea of what you're after.
Naturally, the bent rod would need two 'prongs' with two half hinges fixed to the shelf underside to stop it rotating.

Well done Pete. That is exactly what I would like for my new display stand. To have those would be an answer to prayer. Have you any idea where I could get my hands on some. Many thanks once again.

That idea might be possible by using loose pin hinges and some steel rod (tent pegs?) depending on the size of the rod.

You may need to do some soldering, or whatever is appropriate, to keep the rod in place and you would be dependent on the weight of the shelves plus product.

Sorry CG. I've never seen anything like that for sale commercially. I was thinking more that you could make these yourself. It's just regular hinges with the pins removed. You'd only need to make (or have made) the rods with twin arms to suit the shelf lengths/weight of whatever you intend to mount on them for display.

Going back to this idea …

The idea almost reminds me of a cake / nibbles stand where the individual shelves pivot around the central post.

Perhaps shelves with a hole in, to slip over the pole, secured by a knob / bolt of some kind at the back.
