Snooker Cue alternative to ash

Hi all, I went wood shopping this morning but didnt get any ash as the chap didnt have any ash offcuts.

So my question is this... could I make a prototype cue from a wood like sapele? I know traditionally I totally agree either ash or maple but I want to see if I'm up to the challenge before splashing out on a board of ash.

Would Sapele not be more expensive than Ash ?

Think the best way to find out will be to just go for it

the only downside is that to offer the most benefit, a prototype should be as close as reasonably practicable to the final one, so it might be worth getting a length of ash now, so when you do your final one, you are used to its working properties

That is good thinking! To be honest I will make the sapele one as a new one as an actual replica of my current cue. If it works out well I think I'll be one of few who have a one piece sapele cue
