Anyone know any good methods (preferably chemical) for deodorising and cleaning up the nasty brown sludge that accumulates in plugholes? I have some pipework that I canot easily access, and chemical cleaning is the only viable option without pulling the room apart. There's a plethora of products on the market that claim to clean drains etc - does anyone have any recommendations for a product or a method that actually works and cleans out all the brown sludge from the plughole and u-bend?

thanks in advance :)

Agree with Lurker but if you want a bottled chemical solution Oneshot works and is widely available.

I use caustic soda solution once a month in plugholes, washing machine waste standpipe and in external gullies. Wear gloves.

We have a good product here (Switzerland) but I doubt it's available in UK.

I've found a very good alternative is Borax (a fine white powder, bought in measured-out bags from the local chemist.

use same as for use as a brazing flux - mix into a thick creamy paste using hot water. Brush into the plughole with a small brush as deep as you can go. Leave overnight (NO use of the sink allowed) then flush out with VERY hot water. MAY need doing 2 nights in a row if really bad (and try to stop the missus kids from flushing tiny bits of salad, tea leaves, mustard & sauce residues, etc, etc, down the sink!).
