My fanous (infamous) 16 and a 1/4 stave barrel now needs a small roundover on the edges. But its all bubinga, and previous experience tells me thats going to shatter and splinter when i use a router table and roundover bit because I'm going across the grain.

So how can I get a small (say 1/4" ) even roll around the edges please?

If you've tried the plane-and-sandpaper approach and it doesn't work for you, jam it onto something which will enable you to mount it in your pillar drill, and you should be able to achieve the round-over you desire with a bit of careful sandpapering.

Now that sounds technical enough for me.
Anything rather than fight with a plane.

Plane most of it off to form a rough chamfer. This will show where you have grain problem. Finish off with a scratch stock which will enable you to avoid going against the grain.

So I asked myself "do you feel lucky punk? well, do yah?" and I answered the question with "oh yeh, bring it on"
Most people know by now I can not work hand planes.

I used the 3/8 roundover bit on the router table, working up a few thou at a time and there it is. Nice and even roundover, front and back edge.
I had one very minor splinter off, but as I always make everything oversize and gently walk the item to its finished dimensions I just put it back on the belt sander turntable and sanded it out.

Now then, wheres that lottery ticket shop?
