I hope this is the right place for this question...

I've bought a Startrite P/T + 1-bag dust collector off of eBay, but I now find that I'm utterly swamped at the office and won't be able to go and pick them up in anything like a reasonable time.

Does anyone have any experience with hiring a company to pick up and deliver a heavy woodworking machine from one end of the country to the other? I've heard of palletways, but the seller can't put them on pallets for shipping so I don't know if that will work.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Recommendations? I know there are companies that specialize in this sort of thing, but I can't seem to find the links from the last time I looked into it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The machines are in Kent, and need to get to Newbury (Berkshire)

Donovan.

Kent to Newbury is not exactly far so you might find a man and van with taillift service in local papers would be willing to do the deed. One other possibility is a one man band known as "landylift" He specialises in moving machinery with a crane built onto a customised Land Rover with trailer and can sometimes combine loads with others in similar areas to defray costs.
A google search should find him.

Hi Donovan, I've had to do this a couple of times with some wide format printers. A couple of professional companies with professional fees, but people you can call include:

But you may find cheaper quotes through Shiply, Uship and anyvan, especially if you have agreed to purchase the item and the seller will wait for your collection.

But the best way I have found for bulky heavy items is ring around, find a man with a van and explain the item that needs to be collected. If it is heavy or needs some sort of a lift best to fully describe the problems they may encounter before they make the round trip - then it is their gamble as to whether or not it is worth it and how much they would expect for doing it. You will be surprised how common such requests are and they are happy to do it as they do this day in, day out.

Best of luck mate

That is cheap, but doesn't it mean the item needs to be on a pallet when it is collected?

I think they may do a pack service as well but you'd need to give them a call to be sure.

What I would say is AVOID SpeedShift. I've just had the misfortune of them deliverying a bandsaw from Yandles and it was a complete disaster. The unit is unusable it's so badly damaged and I'm still waiting for them to arrange to come back and take it away so I can get a refund!

I thought you did have to palletize the load for palletways - but I'll check into it.

I'm going through the other suggestions now - I REALLY appreciate the help!

National pallets can provide pallets for a fee, I don't know if they would be willing to actually help put the planer on a pallet. A startrite wont be a big lift I presume it will be tin base with a cast top. If you could get both items on one pallet it would be around £60
