Early 40th Birthday / 2nd UKworkshop Anniversary.

Introducing Cromarty & Inverurie, both came from different towns in Aberdeenshire not far where I used to live, spooky and both cost about £75 spooky.

Heart = Original, Casting = Cromarty and the big beast on the right is from Inverurie.

Well so much for good omens, Cromarty turned out to be very disappointing. A lot smaller than advertised and just a tad smaller than my original Scottish infill, looked like it had been recently refilled by someone with even less skill than I. My grand plan about refilling was in tatters, ok what happens if I refill it, then what ?

I keep it ? I want two almost identical planes ? No

So spotted another and this was indeed a big heavy beastie, almost 3kg compared to 1.8kg of the original Heart one.

Sold with issues, rusty and cracked/damaged bun. Turned out to have third issue the replacement iron was tapered, no doubt from the infill dark ages before the internet and some canny joiner had added some material to the bed to compensate and this has rotted and is stuck to both the iron and bed. Tried soaking in baby oil and scraping with my finger nail, proving slow but will persevere before taking more drastic action with a scraper/chisel.

No plans to change the front bun, a user not a looker.

Not sure what to do about Cromarty, sell as is or a do a quick refurb. It does have a horrible front bun and a ghastly 3 piece rear handle but the cheeks are possibly original so wouldn’t be that hard to make a front bun and replace the handle part.

Thanks for reading,
Carl

When you say "came from Inverurie", presumably it wasn't made there? Inverurie Farmers' market keeps me fed but have not found much interesting in the old tools line.

Good News Dick M,

Next time you go to Invururie it might be worth popping into his shop, might be a few tools scattered amongst the general antiques/ vintage items he sells. Details via pm, he put his card in the box.

No idea where any of the above were made, maybe available as complete planes or just as castings that were then filled at home/work, maybe even by a Victorian Aberdeenshire resident.

That's how Stewart Spiers started out, bought a rough casting, worked his magic and sold for a nice profit. Slowly he transformed from cabinet maker into a plane maker.

If anyone has any info on any of the above please share.
