I am struggling a little bit to come about new patterns, and I decided to get out a piece of Sapele which I had saved with a piece of furniture in mind.

Nice piece of wood.

So I have only taken off a 52mm wide slice and before preparing I have marked up the end to put through the thicknesser and the number of slices I want, again nearly quarter sawn.

Added some Maple decoration to this one and glued up on my tablesaw in one length.

Took this picture this morning after surfaces had been cleaned up on the thicknesser.

The first box is proceeding quite well with no hiccups this time,

But I have got some exotic ideas for this next one, which I have started with Sapele and offcuts of ash but have found a lump of African blackwood which I have been scared to use because it has the texture of a lump of iron.

This African blackwood is very hard, your fingernail has no affect to its surface and it is very fine, however I cut three strips off the batten at the bandsaw and it cut like silk, no problem at all. It must be the blade and power of the motor on the machine that made the cuts so easily.

It also worked well on the thicknesser, just small chips come off as waste showing at picture below.

Went back to the bandsaw and there are actually four pieces for the carcass which I divided down the centre of each.

Commenced the process of gluing pattern to design.

And completed the gluing of carcass pieces early morning before that heat of our High pressure zone came in.

So might only be an hours work each morning for the foreseeable future, any bets on a month of this weather?

Looks like there will be a delighted owner of this one (not that all the others aren't delighted with there boxe's :D ).
It looks like you have the same PT that i have, can i ask what the board is that the wood chips are on :?: .

Regards

Mark

Out of the workshop at the moment and playing games FS, tool hot in ws.
The white board you see is because the black wood is only 4mm thick and the PT is not safe to use setting the depth at that measurement, so I put a 16mm board in place and then set the depth of cut to 19mm and the black wood would then reduce down to 3mm. It still gets hairy if you want to get down to 1mm  . It can be done but the wood needs to be kind to you.

Thanks for the info Devonwoody, never had to go that thin before but will now know what to do if i do :) . Do you hold the board in place with a couple of cross pieces ?.

Yes Mark there is a bar underneath the white board, the front one is at the start of the board an grabs the machine plate and the far end is set to hold the machine plate so the whole board is firm, also the board extends around 250 mm past the metal plate.
The board in the picture was pulled forward to display the chips.

Workshop activity is suspended at the moment owing to temps. reaching 33C during the day.
The situation at present is thus, awaiting tops to be made and fitted to these three carcasses.
