Hi
I have chosen a free audiobook from Amazon and gone through all the malarkey and it's put it in 'my library' ready for download, I tried to download it but the iPad said safari cannot download this file, so my question is, can I load another browser onto my iPad without causing any kind of issues with it...

Should you not be using an App to play an audio book rather than trying to use a web browser.

as chas says you need a reader application . Plenty of free ones in the app store including Kindle app. search for e-reader or kindle and youll have a few to choose from. If your books come from amazon I suggest the Kindle app.

Not sure chas, I visited amazon via the browser and selected an audiobook whereupon it asked me to download it, I tried and failed..

Not for an AUDIObook Nev

It may be that the audiobook is a file format that isn't supported by your iPad. You should be able to find an app that does support it. I don't know if you can put Winamp on an iPad but that has codecs for pretty much every audio file format.

Are you sure you're not trying to download an Android app? A quick search for 'audio books to download' on amazon threw up a lot of Android apps for the kindle fire. AFAIK audiobooks from Amazon are usually supplied through their www.audible.co.uk subsidiary, and played through the Audible App, so it may be worth taking a look to see if you can find the book there??

If you can tell us the title or post a link to what you're trying to DL we might be able to help more...

Link above from Amazon America.

Audible UK seem to want to encourage you to have a £7.99 a month membership. It would appear that the price includes one free download a month. Currently seems to be a sale on at £3.99 for the first 3 months.

To answer your question. Yes you can load as many other browsers on the I pad as you like, FWIW I've got safari + 4 others.

However you may find that none of them will let you download and play that file.

Download the (free) Audible for iOS App, log in with your Amazon details, and download it from there.

Thank you all, i will download the app and take it from there, as an aside, does anyone know what the Abridged and unabridged titles mean?

TIA

Abridged is shortened - usually removing descriptive passages and events that the editors deem not central to the plot - whereas unabridged is exactly as the book was published.
