thanks guys it sounds like you could be right !! useless instructions dont mention it at all apart from that i used the machine all day yesterday for thicknessing and a bitt on top for planning and it worked well :)

I think the user manuals of the vast majority of manufacturers are woefully inadequate, especially of course for the clones manufactured in china etc. you can be entirely forgiven for not realising what you had. My most recent planar came with a piece of hand sawn aluminium extrusion about six inches long. That's the blade setup jig!! Useless. I find American tools seem to have better manuals than ours ( paslode springs to mind)
 
I remember the manual that came with my Basato 4!

It read like it had been translated from German to English by someone in China who could speak neither English or German!!
