Router table

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows a router table that will fit it, or if anyone has any plans so I can make one, am just a keen hobbyist without much money I might be able to get the misses to buy me one for xmas so id have roughly £150 to spend

With the odd exception you don't really get a router table that fits a router.

Typically you buy a router plate and drill it to fit your router. The plate then fits into a table or you make one to fit. The plate should be a standard size, but they do vary a bit. Normally if you buy a table, the plate is part of it.

In my opinion, making one is probably the cheapest and best option, but if you wanted to buy, the rutlands one when on offer isn't a bad bet. http://www.rutlands.co.uk/pp+woodworkin ... les+c10100

Any except the powered one. The list prices are nonsense and are always on sale about that price.

To make one, it can be as simple or complex as you choose- there are plenty of plans online. It can be anything from a hole in a piece of board, with a straight edge clamped to it. You are probably looking at £20 for a plate and £20 for an nvr switch (safety switch). Then whatever timber and board you use.

Ive had a quick look for a table insert do you know where I can find one?

Ive had a look at my router and you have to hold the switch down on the handle when using it, how do you get round this if it is under the table?

I would go with something like http://ebay.to/1FGbef6

They may be cheaper elsewhere but it will allow you to plug in the router and remove it if you need to use it outside the table. No wiring required.

For the switch, a cable tie or a piece of Velcro wrapped round will do. It will be controlled by the new switch anyway.

You will get a plate from axminster, eBay, most of the machinery suppliers. They seem to have gone up a bit so prob nearer 40 quid.

Do you drill holes to mount the router to it?

They would be fine. And yes you drill holes. You normally use the base of the router as a template.

I looked into making one, by the time you've bought an insert plate and an NVR switch and all the bits to actually make it, you might as well get the Rutland one for a hundred quid which has a nice solid aluminium fence, proper extraction point etc.

At least that way you can use it right away. The rutlands one doesn't have an nvr switch but you are still within budget.

If you spend over £100 you get 5% off so buy anything else with it. It seems to get good reviews on the forum.

Yes but I think that they are all the same, the others just having feather boards on. They only used to offer that single model.

You could build one in stages - that's what I'm doing. First stage looks like this:

Simply 2 sheets of 18mm ply laminated together (having routed a hole out of the bottom one to accommodate the base of the router) with a timber batten as a fence and sat on a pair of saw horses. It's not pretty but it's got me going.

Next job will be a better fence ( plywood again) and maybe an NVR switch. I'll probably put a finish on the plywood too but doubt that I can be bothered to stick Formica or whatever on it.

I'm no expert on this as it is my first foray into router table-land, but it seems to work for now. Others with more experience may beg to differ!
