Hi every one, new here and we’ll a bit of a novice with a bit of hunger to learn etc. Have a record dust extractor but today it went pear shaped. As started to spark. Sprayed electrical cleaner onto motor and brushes left to dry, hoping it would only be dust build up. But no joy as more sparks. Looks like they are coming from brushes but there is still about 1/2 ‘ still on them. I noticed a bit of blackening on the bit the brushes come into contact with. But don’t know if it’s the problem. Any advise most welcome as it is not only an important piece but the misus bought it for me a few years back for Christmas of gumtree. So very attached. :D

Totally disconnect from the mains, remove the brushes and very gently rub a bit of sandpaper over the curve that touches the armature to remove any rough spots.
Can you remove the end plate that the brushes are attached to? if so you can rub the sandpaper GENTLY over the area that the brushes touch. If there is signs of melting or severe burning, then the motor is gone. They can be repaired, but nowadays that often costs more than a new motor.
Check that the motor is not filled with sawdust.

Thank you will try that when I get home. I was going to try and source new brushes, but will try cleaning first. Was really sparking

Brushes can be reshaped and cleaned, as long as the springs holding them in are still holding the brush against the commutator. If a brush is broken, or worn too low, then replace them

The important part is the many segments that the brushes touch. If they have clean straight edges youre ok. Some minor wear is fine, even some bluing of the metal, but if the sections between the segments are badly burned and even melted, then its not good news.

If its only one, then I suspect theres a sticky up edge that is causing all your problems. Use a nail file and smooth the edge of the nick. You might be lucky.

Thank you will look closer when I get home as at work now. Some things can’t be without and that’s a dust collector. Another is an excellent source of knowledge of which I’m grateful of here. Will let you know how I get on.

excellent source of knowledge......
no no no. Not me at any rate. I have a "get it fixed quick" knowledge, but as far as motors go thats all I have.
but no one else joined in so lets hope you fix it.

Cleaned up the brass copper looking thing the commucator and rubbed it down with very fine paper. Also cleaned end of brush but still sparking bad. Think it might be the brushes. But don’t know where to get replacement ones as have checked online but to no avail. The search continues as have to make clock surround for missus. And need it operational. Will keep posted as I go along.

Just tried to fins a parts list. Found it, and the brushes are showing on the diagram but theres no part number, which means record dont consider it a user changeable part.
contact record, explain your experience, ask them for help.

In the olden days good brushes were made with a line or mark on the side so that when the line was gone it was time to change them. 1/2" might be time because you don't know how long they started with. One way is to push them gently back in the holder and see how far they go in. If barely in then something else is at issue. If in a ways you need to change them.

Checked out Dennis Wilson of Glenavy, explained situation regarding brushes. Said to call up as he had every type. As when I pushed the brush back in it went all the way and more. So think time for new ones and hoping that solves it. Will keep posted as calling up today for brushes. :D

Sorry for the delay in posting results, but got new brushes and went through inserting etc and cleaning everything, but it was to be of no avail as motor went on fire and had to scrap. Ended up purchasing a new extractor after much reading and review reading. So all back on track for some projects. New one comes with fittings and a hose that fits planner/jointer as well as the old hose also fits the new drum of extractor. Bit noiserer but earmuffs work well. :D
