Hi All,

My Teak garden furniture is looking a bit rough now. I keep it covered in winter, so I don't have any rot issues. It's just looking faded and whatever the previous finish was (from the factory) has gone slightly sticky and blotchy (i don't know what horrible stuff they put on...)

I've never finished garden furniture before, so I'd like to ask: What are people's recommendations for sanding this down and refinishing?
shall I just sand down using sandpaper? or should I use chemical removers?
What product should I re-finish the furniture with?

Thanks all,

S.

Are you sure it is teak?

I have two sets of teak garden furniture, ons is about 20 years old and was made by Barlow Tyrie, the other is half that age. Both of them are in fully serviceable condition and have no rot, though I leave them out uncovered year round. Neither of them were supplied with a varnish or finish, apart from being oiled. Every spring I pressure wash mine with my hot washer, which brings the colour back to the light brown teak, and if I am feeling enthusiastic every couple of years I coat them with teak oil.

Teak is an incredibly durable wood and doesn't take much looking after.

Sorry for doing a runner there! Lost my smartphone, busy with work etc.

I don't what wood it is TBH - will take some pics once I have a new smartphone and post on here...

What I will say is my lounger has gone very pale yellow colour - not brown anymore - after being left outdoors for a year...
