Why is it that some companies like Amazon can have a website that looks fine on a desktop and also on a mobile (because they are clever enough to recognise the end-user viewing device and adjust accordingly)...although all their 'recommendations for you' are a PITA

and then you have companies like Lloyds Bank who seem only capable of designing one website and formatting it for mobiles so that as far as a desktop user is concerned the layout is basically down the middle third of the bloody screen and you spend all your time scrolling and wading through white space and huge font sizes that are more suited to a kiddies Tonka-Toy?

Actually, this forum is not too good on a phone, either!
Some sites respond to phones by delivering a version for small devices, they take advantage of swiping, double tapping etc. Some just rearrange the page to look different. I suspect this is the latter. Sites that demand lots of typing aren't suited to small devices that don't have keyboards.

^Ideally, it's the latter. Thanks to style sheets ("CSS") you can change the size, shape, colour, visibility and just about anything else based on the resolution of the device viewing a page. But doing so still takes time and money and checking it all works with a multitude of different browsers on different devices i.e. a thankless job and work best avoided if you can!

The Lloyd's website works fine for our family. Try holding down the control key and at the same time turn the mouse scroll wheel to fill your screen. Good luck

Looks like Lloyds have a mobile optimised site, perhaps it's different, with a different URL, to the one intended for regular browsers. I don't know, I haven't been a customer of Lloyds while we've had the internet

It is. That was their aim, apparently. No other website for desktop users who can basically go fly a kite.

You mean as is zoom into the webpage where it all goes soft a fuzzy! Not for me, thanks, it's even worse.

Not to worry, I've found a bank that will give me £100 to join and their website is pretty good IMO.
