I am looking to buy one any posts I have found seem to mostly favour the Peter Childs machine my initial intended use is for burning cracks in turnings that I have opened out with a small burr and signing turnings is the Peter Childs one powerfull enough for burning the cracks

I have a Peter Child unit and can confirm that it is of a very robust construction. It can take a reasonably heavy guage of nichrome wire and supply enough current to it to make it glow bright, much more than anything I have used. I would therefore expect it to do the job you want it to do, but it is something I have not tried. Ensure good ventilation of you are using indoors. Good luck with your project.
