I was in Homebase yesterday (please stop throwing those rotten tomatoes at me!) and noticed some "polished porcelain tiles" that looked to the naked eye to be extremely flat. I didn't have a straight edge handy on me at the time  so can't vouch for their flatness. But since they were as cheap an £4 each, I wonder if anyone has seen them and/or used them as a substitute for float glass. They look to be some sort of cement-based foundation upon which a slip of porcelain has been poured with surface tension holding the edges and then its been polished after setting (whilst others have been roughened). I suspect there could be a bit of a bump at the edge due to surface tension, but the main body of the tile should be pretty flat.
