I've just seen the pocket hole jig on offer at Axi - does anyone think that these joints are actually stronger than tenons?
They must have done the research to make the claim, but I find it hard to believe.

I can't see how they would be stronger than tenons, but they do have their place and can be very handy at times.

They are slightly different joint though, so it will depend how you 'force' the joint to breaking point to make the claim. A tenon doesn't really hold the joint (although a wedged tenon could be said to exert sideways pressure on the mortice) and uses glue strength to hold the tenon in the mortice. A pocket hole joint uses a mechanical fixing to 'pull' one face onto another. The claim is probably true under specific circumstances, but not all circumstances eg a twisting force would be more likely to break the screw from the 'pulled' board than a tenon from it's mortice for example.

Horses for courses - I use both, but pocket holes can be difficult to locate in some instances and do not look as aesthetically pleasing. Great on ply or man-made boards for carcassing however, where they excel.

Depends on the project, but they do create surprisingly strong joints. I use a Kreg jig, and love it. I sometimes use a combination of pocket holes and Dominoes, and that method is pretty bullet proof.

Before I bought one I did think it was alot of money for what just literally allows you to drill a hole on the angle. Now I've got one I completely get the hype. The repeatability, the accuracy, the ease of use, the same length screws and knowing how much it might slip when tightened makes it completely worth the cost. I would never rely on it to replace bigger sized tenons, but face frame kitchen size im really tempted to try it. I don't know how I've managed this long without one-besides making things really awkward for myself

Fine for face frames and quick stuff, no where near the strength of a tenon though.
