I am putting together a table of timber yards, with information from members who have actually visited the yards. Can you PLEASE HELP with information about Capital Crispin (Beckton ,London) for veneers?

(To VIEW the full list of yards click here)

(To ADD a new yard/s please post here after checking that it is not already in the table.)

Are they hobby friendly?

Can you self-select or is it by appointment?

Will they deliver?

Do they have online ordering?

Are prices displayed at the yard?

Do they sell domestic hardwoods?

Do they sell other hardwoods?

Do they sell softwoods?

Do they sell manufactured boards?

Do they sell turning blanks?

Are they a one-man-band or a small, medium or large yard?

Will they cut to length to fit in your vehicle?

Do you have any comments?

Thanks for your help,
Neil

What can you say, the only veneer store in the UK that can hold its own alongside the great Parisian veneer merchants. They moved location a few years ago and are now in a modern light industrial unit, doesn't quite have the atmosphere of their previous East End rabbit warren, but their stock is still eye-poppingly wonderful. If you go make sure you take a stroll upstairs, that's where they keep the burrs and the saw cut veneers re-cut from breaker antiques. Capital Crispin is the Mecca of UK veneering, their web site is enough to make your mouth water, in person it's even better!

Custard, the re saw veneer you refer to, is this veneer cut from table leaves etc similar to what you can get done in France where they use that machine with huge great saw blade?

Exactly that. I've also seen a few examples at Timberline in Kent.

As Custard said, the old premises was a real rabbit warren and haunted too, or so the guys tell me.
Capital Crispin is almost a museum of veneer you could say, and, despite this, I think it's worth emphasising how friendly the service is: no purchase is too small.
Beware tho' it's very easy to spend a lot of money here: you go in for one particular thing and end up buying a bunch of other veneers because, well, they're just so damn beautiful (and you'll probably get around to using them someday) ☺
