If you're going to be planing a fair amount of wide boards (6" plus) in your work then it makes sense to go for a bigger, older lump of solid cast iron. If you try and do that with a smaller, modern machine then you'll most likely be working to the machine and the motor's full capacity perhaps a little too often - which may not be a good thing.
Saying that, I still think, from personal experience, that the Axminster AW106PT represents truly excellent value for the home woodworker when compared with some of the other I've seen and used.
