how do you work out which way up?

I thought that the bevel should face down
I looked at my 60 1\2 and the bevel is up

is this correct ...or did I put it back together wrong ?

Most planes are bevel down, but the Stanley block planes (and some others) are bevel up. You've done it right. Easy to get confused if you're not a plane geek.
