Hi all,

Newbie here, pretty clueless with all aspects of Woodworking. I hope I've posted this in the correct forum - apologies to the mods if not.

I've recently had a joiner produce/fit a TV cabinet - with a colour matching other furniture in the room. It looks brilliant. However, 2 weeks afterwards I've replaced the TV that sat on the cabinet and the protective padding underneath the TV has marked the cabinet - pics attached.

I'm assuming the wax/polish has been taken off by the weight of the TV.

I have two questions I'm hopeful you can kindly answer;

1) If I use the 'Fiddes Supreme Wax Polish' used to get the finish - will I be able to remove this circle or am I likely to make it worse?
2) Is this common/likely to happen with any furniture I put on the items the joiner produced? Should I put a cloth on the wood and wait for so long? I also have shelves you see...

Thanks

If the furniture has been finished with just the wax, then it can be rubbed back and re-applied on the top.

If its one of the tinted waxes there is a slight risk that if the colour has soaked in a bit then re-application may make it a bit darker.

Im not convinced you will be able to rub back just the area around the spot and get an invisible repair.

Wax finishes do not have any build and they dont really create a full protective coating and so are more easily damaged. On the other hand they are also easier to repair as its possible to sand back and re-coat.

We mostly spray finish furniture so dont have much experience with waxes, Im sure somebody will be along soon with plenty of knowledge on this.

It would be a good idea to talk to your joiner if he waxed it originally.

Are you sure that it's just wax on there, nothing used as a sealer on the bare oak?

If there was a little film finish (varnish or lacquer) used as a sealer or first finish then what we're seeing could be an interaction between plasticisers in the 'rubber' feet and the resins in such a finish (they migrate out of one material into another, especially under pressure).

With wax you have nothing to lose applying a bit and buffing off. It can't make it worse!

Guessing about what happened here I think this might depend on what you put on them. With hard things, particularly if made from a non-reactive material, there should be no issues at all (except for the potential for scratches since waxes are soft).
