Notice boards ...

I need to construct two notice boards (approx. 0.3m x 1.5m ; 0.6m x 1.5m). They will be covered in a hessian like fabric, and have a solid wood frame.

What I would like some advice on is the material to form the 'core' of the board. It needs to soft enough to take pins readily. Cork is not an option.

I have small commercially produced notice board, that is made of a suitable substance ... it appears be be a very soft form of particle board.

Any ideas ?
