Its easy to hurt yourself at the beginning - perhaps read through the hints and tips for getting started at the top of the forum.

If you want to play around with wood on a metal lathe, you could clamp a chunky wood screw in your metal chuck, and thread a piece of wood onto it. Use the tailstock with a livecentre for extra security if possible.

Yes, I've read about all the horrible things that can happen with woodworking equipment so I tend to be very careful - but as a beginner of course sometimes I don't know what's dangerous anyway so it's always good to learn.

I certainly intend to approach my learning with the lathe very carefully!
