I need to buy a new iron for my #4 Stanley. I would rather not buy anything overly thick, as it might need some modification to the mouth of the plane. Carbon steel preferred. I would rather not buy from Stanley if possible, as the quality of their products has been degrading apallingly.

Any suggestions for a brand/supplier in Europe would be much appreciated.

Excellent blades recommended

I have one in my pre 1927 4 1/2 which has a narrower mouth compared to modern versions and it fits very well. :)

Another possible source is Ray Iles - http://www.oldtoolstore.com/ - who makes and supplies not just original thickness carbon steel irons, but thicker ones and 'fancy steel' ones as well. He also has all sorts of other goodies available too.

(PS - I think you can buy Ray's irons through Workshop Heaven, too.)

Thanks both for your help.
It seems these days it is easier to get 3mm quality irons than standard thickness ones... I will have to check the implications on my plane.

Thanks, carlb40. But... £55.44 ?
Agree. More sense to buy several old planes. Blades are usually good even if the plane is a wreck.
