Only after half an hour or more of riding, and usually only after a long stint with the throttle open, serious smoking issue. If I just blip about at <60mph it doesnt get hot and it doesnt happen? I am leaning towards oil rings - probably sticking (bike was in a box for years).
this is after a weekend or more with a dose of diesel in the plugholes, an engine flush (carlube) and oil change and a thirty mile ride.

Combination of piston rings and valve stem oil seals. A splodge of Redex and/or diesel could offer a temporary cure.
