Managed to get a bit of workshop time last couple of days and made this hollow form from a piece of monkey puzzle tree. Needs some further coats of oil but really like the figure in the wood.

Log had been stool in workshop for last 4 months or so and was nothing like as sappy / messy as I had been warned about or it’s reputation. However, clean cuts without tear our were almost impossible across the end grain top and bottom. Tried all variety of gouges (all freshly super sharp) in terms of push / pull / shear cutting; high / low nose angles, normal and low handle presentation and traditional and swept back grinds. Made small difference but must admit to having to resort to 80 grit gouge to get it finished! Anyone experience similar and got any tips for next time?

C&C welcome.

Simon

I like that a lot. Very original.
No idea how to deal with wood like that, unless some sanding sealer or wood hardener helped reduce tearout.
