My late brother-in-law had a 'layout' in his loft which worked from a timetable, be day he was a cabinet maker, he used saw dust to mimic different surfaces, from smooth playing fields to ploughed furrows, sawdust had its uses.

His wife eventually auctioned off most of his rolling stock and track and got well over £1000, not a cheap hobby, and to be honest not something I am interested in, although I do appreciate the time spent getting to these standards.

I have seen the Hamburg layout previously and it is a magnificient display of the modelling genre. However it is not for us mortals at the cost of its production.

Some of the private displays have a merit that aproaches art and craftsmanship in my views.

The Hamburg videos are very good indeed. I particularly like the one of the small mountain train climbing up into the Austrian mountains and ending up at a ski lift. The scenery is spectacular as are the bridges, tunnels, and the craftsmanship of the model building generally.

Well it does not have the fireworks of a commercial enterprise like Minatur Wonderland but for sheer mind blowing attention to detail you cannot beat Pendon.

Ah yes, must find an excuse to get there. 8)

Like all the places on your doorstep, they always seem to be the last to get visited.
