Just to mention that I have started mk.2 box for the children.

Looking for some veneers to fit 250mm x 150 lids so need sheets that have usable dimensions, any for sale or links appreciated.

Had some good fortune yesterday, went to B & Q for some ply for veneer base work and when I left the store there was a free bin with request to help myself. So I did.

The box started well with some good fortune as well, this piece of Sapele only needed a shaving off one side then ready for use.

Finished the session with enough stock to make a start on mk2.

I will not do a wip and bore you with repeat of earlier box but if an interesting subject arises I will post again.

I will have a look for veneers, dw. May well have something. Anything particular in mind- colour, figure/pattern, species?

Which way does the grain need to run- is it 6" wide or 10" wide?

Be interested if you locate some veneers, grain to be happy to the 10 wide measurements plus a little for waste would be great.

I could accommodate many colours and figure.

Did do some work on my birthday, I refurbished my setting up board, if you recall the old work top really had the pox. So here is the new side with a slight modification, a lug has been added to the new underside that clamps into the vice.

Got moving on Mk2 box, modification to the height of top compartment, an extra strip.

I'm finding it quite difficult these days working to my box designs without working plans and an instruction sheet, its amazing what gets bypassed.

Anyway here are some pictures of the progress todate.

And the upper box sections glued with mitres already cut, but must remember to put in all the rebates before gluing .

I only have one set of veneers left so will have to go shopping, although I am giving ebay/paypal a miss for the time being, my account seems corrupted.
Could not even get an order working for some earth magnets to my satisfaction earlier this week.

No problem, got some for this one and I might be shutting the ws down shortly for the winter depending on weather. Have a good week.

Another disaster story to come, seems to be a lot of them these days.

Getting all the box parts glued up and then putting them through the thicknesser to clean up is where this disaster occurred, two chunks were torn out of the sapele type timber by the machine and happened to the lower section of the box.

They could not be recovered so I again changed tack and decided to turn the project into a trinket box to go with the first box under construction at the other thread. The timbers match so that young lady should do well, she will now have an additional jewellery box.

I cut dados to the four pieces using the table saw making two border cuts and then cleaning out the centre waste with a small chisel. These parts are to accommodate the veneered lid of the same appearance as first box.

Progress so far, carcass constructed with veneer lid, lid to be sawn off, (no hinges this time  )

A picture displaying the two boxes (together with some of those past projects and swaps with members here :) )

You have had quite some misfortune with the thicknesser

for your work.... i would recommand a drum sander. that would do the job much better

no tear-out

There had been a bad history with this delivery of sapele, I recall three years ago putting a 5x5" lump on the lathe and a large bit coming off, (just missing me) and I never used the lathe again after that occurrence, (lathe sold around a month ago)and many bad experiences with normal table saw cross cuts, (chipping out on mitre edges) so a sander might have been the best course with this piece. Anyway will go and look at a drum sander, there was even a purpose made one shown here on the forum some time ago.

Drum sanders seem to me to be the luxury that very few workshops have. Everyone gets the staples...table saw, bandsaw, P/T etc etc but that elusive drum sander that would solve so many pain in the neck finishing problems.....I guess they're very expensive and take a fair bit of room which pigeonholes them more towards commercial setups. I dream about them :) (I know...I should probably get out more)

Its not more dusty then your table saw, provided you connect it to an extractor

Just have a look for one,

I think it will be very helpfull in preparing you're boxes

ps its a whole lot less noisy then a P/T

I will post a wanted and see if any thing comes up, but for me economically it would not make sense.

Lid removed from carcass and came off sweet as a nut, used a handsaw and cut through the prepared dado when preparing boards and cleaned off with a block plane.

I have marked the top with a pair of crosses, these display the veneer join line at centre of lid, the join is faintly visible because pva glue was used and goes dark and timber is very light. It is going to be a drop on lid so a knob/lifter could be attached along this line.
Anyone here who does any carving and would like to make a piece for this area would be a nice addition.

Base board about 3mm ply fitted so a nice spacious small box should result.

Box now ready for the lady to decide the finish and compartments. (four corners added to base in African black wood).

Lift off lid created by inserting a liner internally and the box lid comes off the carcass smoothly.

The young lady is lucky, she is getting the pair because the larger box design in my opinion has much wasted interior space so a trinket box for those small items I thought made the project more practical.

Displayed with other items made in the past.
