Hi all,

Not done a raised panel door before in mdf. If i use a raised panel cutter, should i do a few passes graduating the depth? I am just thinking that when it comes to spraying, such a large area of moulding on the panel will soak up LOADS of paint.

Any tips or techniques or previous experience in this area?

Really just want to know if there is a precautionary measure to take or a prep idea to help seal the fibres?

Cheers

You can buy MDF edge sealing primer stuff designed to stop paint soaking in.

If your going to do that then yes deffinitely do it in several passes.

As for doing it in MDF......bit dodgey.

Make sure you get a good quality MDF and not the coarse cr*p they sell at wickes!

I've heard Zinsser bin is pretty good but haven't tried it yet

+1 on using a quality MDF. I use MR MDF which is a lot more expensive than standard MDF but the edge doesn't "fur up" as much

Yes all the replies are correct use MRMDF for this. I personally use Morrells solvent 2K AC primer for sealing the edges of MDF. 2 coats sprayed on, first sanded down with 120 grit and the second sanded down with 320 grit. I should add though it is not cheap at £30 for 5 litres and you really need an air fed mask to spray it. I too have heard that the Zinnser bin is very good for sealing MDF edges but have not used it yet. and yes take a few cuts when raising the panel for a better finish. HTH.

Nowadays unless i am doing painted carcass work, i always use MRDF it is just more versatile. As for finishing, i take it you would create a profile sanding block to sand the mould? Obviously if it is just a straight bevel raise, then thats easy enough.

I guess as with all things like this i need to test run it all so i will do that and see what happens. Now to find a cutter.......
