Hi All
From Newbie. In the early nineties I bought a set of Marples bevel edge chisels and have been pretty disappointed in them ever since. Is it just me, or have others found that their steel is quite soft and they just don't keep the edge that one might expect? Thinking of trying some Narex or 2 cherries as a replacement. Read some earlier comments on these and seem pretty positive. Oupa

Dependent on your budget the Narex are excellent I had them on a pass around from Mathew at Workshop Heaven when they 1st came out and you will find many on here are very pleased with them.

Or if you want to save some cash buy old Stanley 5002's (blue handle) or 5001 (black handle) from boot fairs or ebay, the 5001's are marginally better than the 5002's both are made of excellent steel and if you avoid buying a set (big price premium) they can be had very cheap on the bay.

Personally I've not gone mad and ripped of the handles (many do see here https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/marples-stanley-chisel-challenge-t55834.html) but you can if you like. However I have re-ground a few for dovetailing and other specialist purposes.

Whatever you choose enjoy.

Thanks Richard

And there was I being accused as being the only man in the world completely over the top about looking after my tools. I think those handles are great for lighter work. I personally don't like the feel of plastic handles. In this throwaway society I think its wonderful to see enthusiasts appreciating and improving their tools. I bet it eventually results in more enjoyment in actually doing the job and a better result. I wish I had their skill - maybe one day.

Best wishes

Ant
