Many thanks to Ian Parkin. (FLH801978) for turning up some heads for me. Really useful to have a metalworking section of the forum. The handles are oak sapwood - hopefully will not snap, but given that I'm mostly likely to use this for stone carving, with the head cradled in my hand, should be ok.

Yes, but a tool's a tool, and you can't be too precious about it.
Absolutely, but it looks so beautifully made it could be an item made for ceremony, rather than real work.

Are the heads brass or bronze ?

Ian offered to make them in steel or brass. I opted for the latter. I have a commercial steel stone carvers mallet - not a patch on these. The handle is poorly finished and rough, probably give me blisters. I will have to replace it, I guess.
