but the Duel G5 Tower had two seperate processors as opposed to 'cores' .

You could go mad and buy a dual quad core Xeon monster :D

We bought a server from Dell, with 8Gb RAM, with 8 cores, it's a little bit quick. 8)

We use it as a test platform running VMWare, and performance is more than adequate on all 7 simultaneous copies of Server2k3  Not bad for a 1U box .

More of a suprise was it only cost £1700 + VAT

I realise I've gone way off topic.... I'll go back to my cave now

The difference in performance is even more marked than I remembered.

Even the lowest size/cpu speed iMac walks all over the MacBook Pro.

imac 20" - speedtest 257
MacBook Pro - speedtest 217

The most pwerful/largest macBook Pro only reaches 233

It's a no-brainer

Are these test available online ROger?
The problem with the imac is that I cant tuck it under my arm and take it to a meeting or off on site etc.

Cheers Mike

I am sure that there will be some somewhere online. The figures I gave you came from MacWorld magazine

Well if you need portability then there's no debate, is there. I would ensure whichever portable I got had 2Gb of memory and then decide how deep my pocket was.

The one other aspect is that the lower end Macs (desktop or laptop) tend not have a DVD writer. They can read DVDs naturally.
