I have been using a CCL lathe for some time now and while I would like a new Lathe I cannot afford one so will stick to the one I have.

Recently though I have noticed that when I switch on, I need to spin the lathe by hand to get it going and if I am slightly aggressive when using a gouge, the lathe stops and I need to get it going again by hand.

Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this?

Work belt, or dodye starter capacitor.......

how does the drive run if the belt is slackened ( if you can on ccl 's ) ?

It is the capacitor a very common fault with this type of lathe.

On the side of the motor you will see a largish lump held on with one or 2 screws, undo these and the top comes off and you will see the capacitor. Axminster sell them but a cheaper option can be to go to Maplins or your local electric parts supplier and get one from them.

I've purchased replacement capacitors from HERE with no complaints.

Just make sure you select one of the same or higher working voltage and RUN Rated as opposed to Start.

Your lack of torque indicates that the Capacitor is left in circuit all the time to give a supporting phase shift and needs to be RUN rated so that it does not overheat.
Start rated are only designed to carry current for a few seconds.
