Long lasting weatherproof finish

I am making a new support, out of oak, for the cross on a church porch roof, what is the best treatment for it against the weather?

Unless you plan on regularly maintaining it I'd leave it unfinished so it greys/silvers naturally.

I hope I'm not teaching my Grandmother but make sure there's no sapwood because it'll rot and drop off in no time.

Even oak can rot if in a bad position. Had to refinish an oiled oak bench that was badly rotting in parts. It was positioned under an oak tree up on Dartmoor so spent a lot of it's life wet. Used Sikkens light oak which has preserved the bench well but not exactly a nice natural colour.
