Anybody know anything about this bench top belt driven saw a,nd can it be got in the UK. Reason, it has a belt driven saw and should be a lot quieter than a direct drive. Space and noise are both a premium for me. any other suggestions would be good.

Using it only for small work.

Cheers

After googling the saw, it seems it is no longer available. Plus some of the reviews were unfavourable.

Not sure what your budget is? But how about the axi ts200?

Also something to consider, when you say small work? What sort of items will it be? Just thinking maybe a small bandsaw might be a better option?

Hi Carl
I have a small band saw and its fine for doing a decent amount of work, but it sits in the corner and has to be moved. I did have a small cheap bench top saw that I used for years, it was easy to pop on my work bench and pack away in the corner when not in use, accuracy was not great, but it did the job. It blew up last year and I dumped it.
Small work is really small work, coffee table size type stuff. We may moving house and if I have to do another renovation (as I did Here, a complete gutting job) I will buy something bigger.

Thanks for the link, I will have a look. 8)

I'd say a belt driven saw would be louder than a direct drive saw if both used an induction motor?

Thanks Andy
I think I need to do a bit more reading on the subject. I seem to have read somewhere that the belt driven was the quietest. Methinks there is more to it than meets the eye.

The budget is not to much of an issue, more the size and noise.

Perhaps what you have read is referring to a saw using a universal motor? These motors are very loud but spin at high rpm so you don't need to use a pulley system to increase the rpm, allowing them to be used in the direct drive configuration. Universal motors are normally found in the lower quality machinery.

Induction motor powered machines are much quieter, but because the motor spins at a lower rpm they normally require a pulley system to increase the rpm to allow the machine to function correctly.

Might be handy if you could point the op towards a bench top saw that is both direct drive and fitted with an induction motor.

I don't think such a machine exists because it would not be able to rotate the blade at the required peripheral speed.

My Lutz Jumbo is direct drive and induction. As is my 'toy' 8" B&Q special. Both whisper quiet.

My other 2 are brushed and noisy as hell.

If you want quiet, then it has to be induction, but a belt drive is not essential.

Thanks for that guy's
I really appreciate your input. The times I have done research, bought stuff and got it wrong is amazing. now I just need to narrow it down to a small induction model with a reasonable power input. It seems that the TS200 falls into this catagory (thanks Carl). Any other models I might look at ?

Appreciate your input.

I think the only saws in that size range are the axi ts200, charnwood version of same plus the kity it is based on.

Thanks Carl
That has given me a couple more to look at. I am off to Wiltshire for a couple of days, so may not answer any of my mail until Thursday.

Just out of interest does the TS200 come with the sliding cast Iron top as standard? it says it is an optional extra in the blurb, but remember reading that it came with it, Just a thought.

Just found the answer to my own question.....no, it don't come with the sliding top, thats another £95 is quid.

They do sell it as a kit with the sliding table plus RH extension table. Good if you have the space? If you are considering it, if you google the saw you will get lots of hits for making a stand/cupboard/ router table for it :)

Just ordered the
Axminster Hobby TS-200 Basic Table Saw & Accessories - PACKAGE DEAL at about£430 should be here in a couple of weeks.
