turned this a few days ago, I hadn't marked up what wood it was though  I think it was chestnut? I would like to know because it turned really nice and would like to try some more.

Hi Mrs S.

If you reckon it was chestnut it would be Sweet Chestnut. The common Horse Chestnut looks very like Sycamore in colour, and is almost as soft.

Sweet Chestnut looks very similar to Oak in colour and texture, just a little softer.

Hope this might help.

thanks people, don't sound like chestnut do it? I'll go with the Oak then Tulsk.. If you'r from near Wakefield, you can't be all wrong!

hehe.. you're almost right I'm from very near Wakefield but alas I can certainly be wrong! It is those visible rays that made me think it was quarter sawn oak. Btw I'm sure you're aware but if not there is a very good woodturning club at Batley (actually called Birstall Woodturning club) that has good demos etc. Cheers John
