Hi all

We are having our bathroom redone and I wanted to know if I could use a walnut or oak kitchen worktop from ikea as the size is good. Perhaps I would need to put a waterpoof coating on? Failing that what wood is best for bathroom use in general? Thanks

Lots of people use kitchen style worktops in their bathrooms, the trick is to make sure they are well sealed, especially around the rear edges. Whether woodchip core or solid wood the principle is the same; presuming standing waste gets wiped up, it's the water that gets down the back that does the damage longterm.

For solid wood, hardwoods obviously last longer, and ones from the teak type family, iroko etc have the best natural water resistance and why they are used on maritime vessels.
