A friend has asked me to sort out a botched repair of part of an easel. It's the mitred slide for holding the top of the painting, and has broken along the grain line of the mitred saddle at the thinnest point, unsurprisingly. It's been badly glued together with a white adhesive, most of which has come off, but there is a clear film on the bits where there were air spaces in the join :!: . it's too hard for PVA, but too soft for Cascamite and the thicker bits look as if they might have foamed. Polyurethane? (I've never used any)
And if you can suggest an ident, what is the best solvent, if any, for removing the residue prior to doing a better repair?

Only guessing, but semi hard white adhesive sounds like one of the many 'construction adhesives' that come in a cartridge - No More Nails etc. The clear glue could be PVA from a previous failed attempt.
