Hi all, just a quick one, been playing in the shed to get my hand back into using hand tools and found a small phone holder that i liked the look of so tried to replicate.

so i have chiselled out about 4mm for the back to fit in then will glue (need more practice on chiselling out accurately!) and will glue, but wondering if there is anything i can do to add some more strength, apart from going deeper into the wood (which i may do for a few mm more).

it isnt going to be put under much stress, but would rather it not fall apart!

the idea is to add some holes for pens and looking at some cheap plastic test tubes ( eveyrthing so far seems to have a cap :( )to add a single stem flower, as it is a practice item just experimenting so nothign too expensive just yet.

I can't make out the joint from the photo, but one simple way of strengthening housing/dado joints or rebates, is with a simple rubbed on glue block. Keep the glue blocks short (say under 70mm) and you'll have no problems with differential wood shrinkage. The trick is is in the "rubbed on" bit, glue blocks are a devil to cramp in place, and screwing is a faff, so you want a grippy glue that will hold the block in place and cure properly without pressure.

Choose any of these adhesives and you're golden,

Good luck!

thanks.

the joint is the hole in the wood on the right, and the bit on the left fits in.

it is cut so the base of the wood will be used as the base of the item as well so a T shape, so will just use the glue i have (some wood glue, cant recall the name) and see how that works.

probably be on the desk for a while then migrate to the shed for somewhere to keep the phone out of the muck!
