I think I have been told before but I have forgotten.

How do I select all the email contacts at the address book (windows live mail)?

Then I want to export them to my temp. hard drive.
Something goes wrong when I export these addresses, they are never in the folder on that harddrive when I want them.

Don't know if this will work for you but try it.
Click on addresses
Single click on the top name
Press and hold Control (Ctrl)
Click and hold on the top name and scroll down (thaey should all turn blue)
Right click and click on 'copy'

You should be able to paste them and all details elsewhere.

The way to export them as a backup is to open live mail, click on contacts at lower left, on top ribbon bar, click on export. Choose comma separated value (csv), next, browse, choose your backup location, give the file a name ( i usually call it addy), and click save. All done.

Thanks above.

I went the export csv comma way, but it did give me some headaches. It did not create a yellow folder on my external harddrive where it was stored just a very pale icon amongst many entries.

Also when it opens in the microsoft office type program it is not in alphabetical order, but numerical.
do you know how to change that arrrangement by any chance please?

Hi

You do have to have the location ready e.g. a new folder where you are going to put it. The creation of a csv file happens in a premade folder. This file can then be opened in excel by double clicking it. When open, you will have the headers, name, email addy, town, street and any other fields you selected during export along the top. Highlight everything by lassoing it, except the title line.

then choose sort and filter, custom sort, sort by column A, order A-Z, OK

What spreadsheet programme do you have?

microsoft office excel.

With your excellent tutorial and advice, problem solved. Thanks.

No problem. I wish I was half as competent at the lathe as a PC. The kindling bin wouldn't be as full :D
