I so love my LN 41/2 that I am thinking of buying him a 55 degree frog for his birthday and for those tricking knotty pine days.

If you've got a 55 degree HAF is there any point in a 50 degree one? Are there occasions when the lower angle one would suit better other than being a bit easier to push?

Hi Simon

On the hard interlocked timber I use it is easy to tell the difference between a 50 degrees and 55 degree frog. In my experience there is little advantage to using a 50 over a 45. It is better to go straight to the 55 degree frog.

With the #4 1/2 especially, it is important to lubricate the sole with candle wax. I also have a #3 with a 55 degree frog. That is definitely easier to push without lubrication. Adding wax levels the playing field.

Derek, that Bronze 4 1/2 is such a nice plane! I kick myself every time I see one, I came close toordering one a few times, but the "voice of reason" told me that I didn't need one. That's a lesson to all of us, never listen to the voice of reason when it comes to buying planes!!! Grrrrrrr!!!
