Hi. Can you guys point me in the direction of a good budget chuck for my axminster lathe that I've just upgraded too. Its a 1inch 8tpi. I've been a 'turner' for just 3 weeks and am totally addicted. Would you believe I'm teaching myself with the help of the guys on YouTube. I'm updating from a second hand lathe from Aldi! I hope I've not made a mistake, especially as a young guy on you tube with a Clarke lathe the same as mine has made a goblet with 2 loose rings on the stem! I've made my own ring cutter and ferruled handle and have made 2 baby rattles, one with 2 rings, the other with 3! About 6 boxes with lids, and a vase in the style of a turkish tear jug already......along with a few mistakes! I need something to avoid having to fiddle with an alloy backplate! Your wise words to a poor turner would help I'm sure. Thanks.

There are lots of chucks out there and everyone will have their own preference. For example I have a Robert Sorby Patriot chuck which I am very pleased with, I have two lathes and one has a 3/4" X 16 thread and the other 1" X 8 thread and because you can buy inserts for the chuck I can use it on both.
Another thing is I can also buy different jaws for it and it is well made.

I understand the Axminster chucks are also very good so maybe someone who has one will come along and comment on them

So whatever make you go for a few pointers.
So have a look at is it able to be used on different machines so that all you need to do is buy an insert.
Can you get new jaws for it or different ones.
Are spares readily available.

After all a chuck is quite a big investment

Another poster suggested the G3 chuck.

I tested this chuck for "Woodturning" magazine and my results might be of interest to you?

I am unsure of it being available in the thread you wish to use but there is no harm in asking?

The chuck is capable of much more than can be imagined and it will not break the bank!

Hi

This looks like it is pretty good value for money, has the thread you require and should cover most applications:

Unfortunately I don't have any personal experience of this chuck however I have the Rutlands Dakota XT700 chuck and can vouch for it's quality. Maybe someone on here has purchased this kit and could advise.

Regards Mick

Thanks to all for your input. So much help! Looks like its going to be the G3 kit. Spoke to an owner, and actually saw one today. Very nice it looks too. Let's hope I can do it justice!

Practice makes perfect eh? And I'm loving the practice!

Thanks again chaps.
